Destiny's Conflict: Status Updates

originally posted by Melanie Trumbull

Just took an opportunity to put in a mention of Janny Wurts and WoLaS online. Social media is not my thing, as I don't even have a cellphone thingy or a computer, everything I do is through public computers at places like the library branch. (I'm old enough that my education was BC, Before Computers.)
My browsing reading habits very recently brought me my first encounter with Robin Jarvis who has been publishing fantasy fiction in England for years. There he seems well known; in my part of the US it is, Robin Who? Anyway, I am slowly getting acquainted with him and his writing/artwork; and while looking for more info about him, I encountered:
a "wordpress" site recently opened by some fans of his, for the express purpose of reading through Robin Jarvis' books in chronological order. Seems he has quite a following online in the fanfiction world. So this is what I did: I subscribed to the wordpress blog, if that's what it is. I got ready to read the book they all will begin with on 2 January 2017. Then – knowing that the two people running the site moderate the comments – I introduced myself and remarked on the read-through project. Then I said, "as for what kind of writing interests me…" and stuck my neck out and described Janny Wurts and WoLaS as tersely and economically as possible, and that your series had a new book coming out. I was scared that they might edit this out but I posted it anyhow.
Just got a reply from the Australian fan of Robin Jarvis – the other moderator/host is in England – and he said, "I will note down Wurts' name as well," while welcoming me to the subscriber group.
I figure it does little harm, and may even help. Hope so.

Melanie - thank you. This is exactly the sort of outreach that makes a difference - and I DID see a jump in the stats, yesterday, so if that was your post, the results are immediate.

I will pass on the blooper fix request - no worries, there, nobody's going to be upset with you!

249 days.

The cover art was turned in, today, just waiting to hear confirmation from the art department in London that they picked up the files successfully.

Interior art:

Chapter head grapic: done

Frontis piece: nearly there, just a little inking to go.

End piece: designed, waiting for ink to finalize the drawing.

Copy Edit pages: are on the way for my review. I hope to scout for a preview passage during that pass, and give you a glimpse that won't spoil.

The Plan: to complete the Wars of Light and Shadows novella that I've had 2/3 complete in time for a surprise.

Meantime, to scratch your itch, you can get The Decoy in Unfettered II, and look out for Black Bargain in Evil is a Matter of Perspective, coming soon.

All of the interior art is now inked to finish - process begun to translate it to digital files to hand in.

On a fun note: rather than waste all the ink left in the technical pens, I've begun to construct the official Map of Dascen Elur. Let's see how far I get (because more deadline pressure is looming, regarding page proofs due date, which I don't know, yet, and also, another novella I want to finish ahead of it to fit into an opportunity on the plate - so the pressure is ON.

May I request a favor? Would someone who was/or is active on the SF Chronicles forum please update the Janny Wurts thread with the official publication date set for Destiny's Conflict (September 7, 2017)? That page is shamefully behind date, and with the book solidly in production (the copy edits are very very light work) - it would be fabulous if fans there could see the scheduled release.

Now the cover art is in, I expect they will do the typography and start the pre-sale page for real and the numbers there will ABSOLUTELY affect how the book is treated, and what sort of press run/promotion we get for it.

The lead up to that release is a prime moment to shift the parameters and get more behind the series, so readership here has a very strong say.

Thanks.

Whoever did the prompt update to the Chrons page - thank you, blessings, you are a godsend!!!

Well, you know - I've really enjoyed all of the books and I'd like to see how it all works out.

Just one question to clarify something, in case I get asked about it on the Chrons - Does the 7 Sep release date apply to the UK market as well as the US?

The reason I ask is that Amazon UK currently has 5 October 2017 as the release date. I appreciate that Amazon may not have yet caught up to the publisher. However, I may get some queries about my post on the Chrons site and (in case someone asks) it would be nice to have a definitive answer on that point.

Far as I know, release will be worldwide on that date, as HarperCollins 360 handles the distribution that is not in the UK.

The page on Amazon, far as I know, is a 'place holder' stuck there before the release date was set. Now that all the cover art is turned in, they'll be creating the type design, flap copy, and once that is ready, I truly expect they'll upload a new page with the color art and exact release.

The copy edited pages arrived here on Friday (which is the last look I get before typesetting) and the copy editor's touch was very light - mostly hyphenations and little quibbles of punctuation. I've got 3 weeks to look it over and OK it. Page proofs are made from that. So there is no undone work, nothing holding things up. I've got the interior art being shifted to digital format, now (which requires cleaning up little artifacts that the scanner 'saw' that don't belong - and cleaning up any fuzzy lines or gray from the ink lines on the image). That bit is literally the last piece to go in, and I expect it to be gone before this week is out.

In a few weeks, I will start agitating to have that page updated (which has to be done internally by the publisher). I have not done so, yet, because I don't want them to put up a 'description' of the plot that I haven't vetted for undue spoilers.

Hope that gives you the ammo you need to answer any salvos that come your way.

It's official! The ten black and white artwork files for the interior illustrations are turned in, which was the last 'creative' deadline for Destiny's Conflict.

Only production deadlines to meet, now (copy edit/page proofs).

The copy edited pages are here for my review now; when they are completed, I start the next cycle: draft begins for Song of the Mysteries. You'll know that the gun's gone off at the starting line when the STATUS THREAD appears in the Song of the Mysteries topic (currently locked).

Nail biting, leg shaking anticipation!!!

Great to hear about the anticipation - the wind up on this book will take a twist that you won't anticipate, then build just a little past half - by Chapter set 8, the lid blows off, totally. What happens thereforward - expect any and everything, and a whole lot more you can't sight in advance.

I am still at the copy edit; there is no editor current on this project, so it is ALL up to me.

I am very very excited for this book. If anyone will be at the Conference on the Fantastic in the Arts in Orlando, this month, Don and I are doing an art presentation. There will be LOTS of original art from Athera and a first public view of the cover paintings. I'll also have the art up at DragonCon in September just prior to Release Date.

I'll volunteer to help edit for ya! I are good at Engrish  Actually I'm decent and I'm sure many of us would help flesh out any major annoyances and inconsistencies quite happily for a shot at getting our greedy paws on a rough copy… just being helpful

I can't say that any of your books were predictable, so saying this one will have a twist I won't anticipate is par for the course for me. Still, naughty author to needle us poor drooling readers and get us frothing at the mouth!

179 days to go…

…and I wouldn't think any editor could handle Destiny. I feel very content that Janny is the editor (even though it's more work for her).

Really - I'm counting the days.

The hard cover version has made it's long awaited arrival for pre-ordering. I am actually trying to pre-order it through my local Sci-Fi bookshop, but it is not on their system yet.

Amazon is showing October 5th.

Janny - where should we order the book for the best result for you?

Hi David - a sale is a sale is a sale. Bought new, the numbers count. So suit yourself.

Past that: comment, rate, review!!!

Hi all.

Any clue when the book will be made available in South Africa?

Thanks.
