Notes and thoughts while reading the book

Just a reminder. The requirement for SPOILER SPOILER SPOILER at the top of posts is still required and will be until at least one year after the US edition is published.

Wendy - it was already done and turned in by then. All of the inspiration for the "sailing" scenes in this series were taken from direct blue water experience - delicately mixed with rock hard time doing research, since I did all my offshore time on fore and aft rigs, not square sail.

Harland's reference, Seamanship in the Age of Sail has been a godsend and a bible, for how square rigs actually work under sail…and it goes into great depth and detail for every condition, and lists how each line and spar and knot were handled, and why, and also covers variations for time period.

Without the actual hands on, however, all of that information would have little meaning, and would not give me any sense of "where" such insertion of detail had any meaning whatsoever in the moving drama of an onpage scene.

Hurricanes here - not much drama. Just hunkered down in a DARK house behind hurricane shutters listening to the wind and the weather play wild havoc outside. You get to see more watching TV, and honestly, if I see one more idiot with a mike in front of a trashed gas station kiosk - I will howl. grin.

Hi all need to get this of my chest!!

Absolutely brilliant book again Janny!!!

Right contains S P O I L E R S S P O I L E R S
S P O I L E R S S P O I L E R S

About Arithon and Elaria:
1) Quote from Arithon p411(UK ED)
________________________________________________
"Your talent and mine are that strongly matched"
________________________________________________

now that has led me to believe that Elaria could becomed trained as a master if she were to ask the F7 for training - rem Lysaer never asked! If this happened the sigil emplanted by Morril/Selidie would be cleansed from her aura by HERSELF. Elaria needs to win her own freedom fron her Koranai ties. However I agree with Trys, Sandtiger and Hunter that she just doesn't realise she can ask, the closer we are to something the harder it is to see!

2)C'mon Janny everyone needs a em… well u know…a quick roll in the hay!!! I do agree with Elaria - it was Arithons and hers choice not anyone elses, but i can also see why the intervention happened (you could have heard me screaming all across the Atlantic!!!)

I have something else but I cant remember now think its to so with Sulfen E - going to be very interesting if he meets Arithon!

have 2 go - no doubt the 3rd re-read will give me some something more to rant on about

later guys

Keep up the good work Janny

Something else that came to mind, and yes, I am Asking (hehe)… I can't remember ever seeing this anywhere, so if this is a repeat question, dun hurt me…

But: Are Dakar and Verrain the only two spellbinders trained/created/whatever you call it by the Fellowship? If they are, how come there aren't more? And if they aren't, what happened to the others? Is there a certain criteria you have to meet to be Fellowship-trained and there just aren't that many people out there who fit the bill? And who instructed Verrain? (We all know who got the pleasure of "disciplining" Dakar lol…)

Luhaine was the one who trained Verrain. That's all I know…

It might just be that training Verrain and Dakar was enough of a time consumer on the remaining F7 members.

Verrain, it seems, has been a spellbinder for over 500 years, so when Luhaine trained him, it might have been while he still had a body.

Asandir, as we know, is embodied, but Dakar is not as advanced as Verrain due to his being a scatterbrain.

Dari s'Ahelas was trained by Sethvir, and "she argued the entire time I tutored her," according to Sethvir's revelation in CotM. Her descendants, including Mak s'Ahelas, Talera s'Ahelas-s'Ilessid, and Arithon were all trained at Rauven on Dacen Elur.

It might be something wherein the Sorcerer has to be embodied or "whole" as Traithe does not have any records of apprentices. Davien seems to be too mysterious/prickly for anyone else, and, of course, Ciladis is still MIA.

OOOOOHHH… one thing I never stopped to think about before. Verrain and Dakar are both "mere" spellbinders, but they have longevity, and were born before the uprising that overthrew the High Kings. What about Dari? Did she make it all the way up to spellbinder, and if so, does she still live at Rauven, in secret, guiding her descendants?

I think Janny wrote once on the board that there have been other spell-binders i.e. F7 aprentices. Dead now though I guess(?)

Longevity: a curious thing. Would a spell-binder become tired of life sooner or later or would their mission continue until the F7 are freed? What's in their contract?

Do the F7 yearn for death after 10000 years of service?

I assume the spellbinders have free will choice, so if they get tired of their duty, they could stop.

I get the feeling that the drake binding is more chafing to the F7 than living so long. Now they live with the constant fear that humans will break the compact and they will have to purge them.

Potential Spoiler -

Who says Davien doesn't have an 'apprentice' … he sure seems to be guiding Arithon

Auna,

That would make two of us who should get around to making accounts…

You should do it before someone else uses your name.

Auna - Davien also seemed to be having an interest in Elaira and her development - such as his presence at the Ath's Hostel in the Skyshiel mountains.

Again I'm don't understand the reasoning behind the F7's idea of consent. It most certainly is hard to ask for help if you don't know you are supposed to ask. Elaira still hasn't been informed that she can ask. and then there is such a thing as 'informed consent'. at least in our world. yes, I know I am comparing to our world again and I also realize you can't idiot proof the world. So when Lysaer didn't take the help offered by the sorcerers I don't believe that he knew what he was turning down. i.e.- 'we would like to offer this surgery which could help you a little.' but then they don't tell him that without the surgery he will live a miserable life or maybe even die. I know I am not being clear here, but now with my second reading and numerous little parts readings I am now nitpicking. [please Janny don't even get the idea that I am disliking anything about the book. I love this story.] but I am an argumentative type and to let all of you in on my secret, I don't argue with any logic at all. One of these days I will tell you of the arguments I have with the characters in this story. It's pretty funny actually but then I kill myself sometimes!! grinning at ya

F7 and consent…

Max,

I guess any advice would be considered interference / intervention with another being's "chosen" (at least on some level?) destiny.

They are not there to serve/guide humanity but there is mention of something like "fostering enlightenment where they can" in CotM.

The F7 responsibility for the planet's health and the royal lines means they must intervene with royal/clan issues…the townborn seem to be left alone except where royal issues are involved (e.g. political leaders in Etarra in CotM).

I think that the major lesson learnt by the F7 in the past is that intervening on certain levels is an error (and one is responsible for the outcome).

However, the F7 do "cheat" from time to time…e.g. Asandir and Dakar in FP: Asandir says something like "one wonders at your lack of curiosity." prompting Dakar to ASK. However, in TK when Dakar asks Luhaine for help Luhaine cannot help Fionn to the extent that he'd like because Fionn on some level refuses help ("you give me nothing to work with", or something like that).
