Our governor acted reasonably early to shut things down, then when it seemed like the virus had been slowed, they tried a step by step reopening. Many people have been refusing to comply with safety recommendations, and now things are starting to shut back down.
The problem is that in modern times, people have forgotten that rights are balanced with related responsibilities. Also, so many people no longer tolerate delay of gratification. Most of the generation who sacrificed to help win WWII have passed on and their wisdom seems to have gone with them.
It's SO easy to wear a mask and increase personal space; and if everyone does it, there's no reason for stigma or embarrassment. If we'd all just do the right thing because it's mutually considerate, there'd be no need for the government to have to order everyone to do it. People seem to be looking for things to get offended about.
The positive thing is that it seems most people ARE showing concern about the wellbeing of their family members, neighbors and friends. Hopefully when we come out the other end of this challenging period, we'll have recovered or increased a sense of community.

@Jeff has it right in that the narrowed-view and selfish/self-interested approach that people seem to be taking, with care only for their nearest-and-dearest, is discounting the community spirit needed to attack this swinging-back curve.
If only we were able to all see that just doing the bare minimum in wearing masks, practicing good hygiene and physical distancing, and listening to medical/scientific advice - instead of looking for any possible excuse to cry foul and conspiracy…

Well, I just had an easy run on the writing - first certain sure sign that the groundwork is settled, and all (or most) of the balls are in play for this novel.
I have a crude draft in record time (for this book) on page for 7 Main. There are still details to flesh in, and some dents to hammer out, but holy wow, it's all 'there' - revisions do take time, but the feeling of known ground is solid.
I pretty much know what the next subchapter will hold, too; the one after that, I've got to figure which bit of action to 'unfold' first. Page count is in the middle 450s, with the halfway point approaching fast.
Well, here we go, I am working up the final stages of the last subchapter in 7 set. The convergency is in motion, now, the clock spring is all wound up, and all I have to do is release the sequences that are cocked and ready to roll. Figuring out the timing and order of what to show when, in the set up stages was just nightmarish. That's behind me now, it's a flat out cavalry charge from here. Page count is mid 480s somewhere, there should be a beer bash at 500 coming up.

Every agonizing day spent setting this all up and laying down the details into the buildup - worth it, though, I'd rather have paid in blood than endure what went on at the desk to get here with that strong foundation underneath. (someday I will tell all, when it will not spoil things).
Two scenes down, into 8 Main. And it's downhill rolling from here - page count in draft at 503.
